Old Navy and TerraCycle Partner in “The Flip Flop Replay”
Program Recycles Flip Flops to Build Community Playgrounds
WHAT: In an effort to further reduce waste, TerraCycle Inc. and Old Navy are partnering in a month-long drive to collect used flip flops and recycle them into four public playgrounds around the country. The community is encouraged to participate by stopping by an Old Navy store to deposit used flip flops in designated collection bins. This is the first time a nationwide retailer has initiated a large-scale effort to collect and recycle flip flops.
WHEN: April 22 (Earth Day) through May 21
WHERE: All Old Navy stores across the U.S.
ABOUT TERRACYCLE: TerraCycle Inc. is an international upcycling company that takes difficult to recycle packaging and turns it into affordable, eco-friendly products. Founded in 2001, TerraCycle is the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable post-consumer waste. TerraCycle works to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. The waste is collected through TerraCycle’s Brigade programs, which are free fundraisers that pay schools and non-profits for every piece of waste they collect and return.

Customers Can Bring Used Writing Instruments To Be Recycled And Receive Coupons
Sanford Brands, Office Depot and TerraCycle Inc. are offering customers a unique recycling opportunity. Beginning April 17 and running through April 23, customers can bring used writing instruments, regardless of brand, to any Office Depot store nationwide.
The Office Depot stores closest to Chesterfield are in Manchester, Ellisville and Creve Coeur.
In exchange for ten pens, pencils or markers, customers will receive a coupon toward a new Sanford product. The collected instruments will be sent to TerraCycle, the pioneering upcycling and recycling company, to be turned into new office-supply products ranging from trashcans to desk organizers.
In 2010, Sanford became the first pen company in the world to fund the collection and repurposed of used writing instruments. Now, Office Depot is the first retailer to collect used writing instruments in-store.
“This is such an incredible initiative that Sanford and Office Depot have undertaken,” said Tom Szaky, CEO, TerraCycle. “With all 1,100 Office Depot stores involved and Sanford providing an incentive for people to bring in their used writing instruments, and the fact they can be any brand, we hope customers will see how easy it is to reduce the amount of garbage they send to their local landfills.”
Since it started last year, TerraCycle and Sanford’s collection program for pens, markers and other writing instruments has kept 150,000 of them out of landfills while also helping raise funds for schools, charities, and nonprofits nationwide. For every writing instrument collected, two cents is paid to a school, charity or non-profit organization of the participant’s choice.
