Chesterfield Elementary School Has Character - Officially!

On June 17, Chesterfield Elementary was honored at the CHARACTERplus National Character Education Conference held in St. Charles, Missouri.  The school was awarded the distinguished titles of 2013 Missouri School of Character and 2013 National School of Character.

It is the only school in the state of Missouri to earn this honor twice in the history of the CEP and one of only three schools in the nation to repeat this distinction.

Chesterfield Elementary was first in the Rockwood School District to be named both as a Missouri School of Character (MSOC) in 2005 and a National School of Character (NSOC) in 2008.

“As a school that was already recognized once as a NSOC, our challenge has been to continue to infuse character education at a high level in the everyday life and curriculum of our students,” notes Dr. Meg Brooks, principal of Chesterfield Elementary.

According to CEP, National Schools of Character are schools and districts that have demonstrated through a rigorous evaluation process that character development has had a positive impact on academics, student behavior, and school climate.

Rockwood Board of Education Vice President Sherri Rogers attended the CEP conference in St. Charles in June.  “The distinction is impressive,” says Ms. Rogers.  “With more than 3,000 schools in Missouri, and over 100,000 schools nationally, this is quite an honor.”

The Board also noted that Dr. Brooks is the only principal in Missouri to have led two elementary schools to MSOC distinction.  “Before coming to Chesterfield, Dr. Brooks was the instructional leader at Westridge Elementary,” noted Rogers. “Her leadership at that school was instrumental in building a character education program that prepares students for citizenship.”

Chesterfield Elementary will be recognized at the Character Education Partnership Conference in Washington, DC in October 2013
