Sculpture and YARN BOMB in Chesterfield Central Park Unveiled This Saturday!

Chesterfield Mayor Bob Nation; officials from Americans for the Arts (Washington D.C.)                                        and the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission, internationally-recognized public artist and former                                St. Louisan, Kurt Pershke, Chesterfield Arts and community residents will converge on Chesterfield Central Park this Saturday to unveil the winning sculpture in Chesterfield Arts'  yearlong University Sculpture                                           Competition.

Rod Callies' winning interactive piece "Aspire" is a series of spires ranging in                            height from 10 to 17 ft. and four feet in diameter. A sculpture student at St.                                                        Louis Community College, Meramec, Callies entry was selected from more than 20 proposals to                design, fabricate and install a site-specific, weather and tamper resistant, interactive                                             sculpture as a permanent fixture in Chesterfield Central Park. To draw attention to the sculpture site and unveiling, Chesterfield Arts will also reveal the                                    largest "Yarn             Bomb" in St. Louis history. A "Yarn Bomb" involves using knitted pieces to                               create temporary, extraordinary art among ordinary outdoor fixtures such as trees, benches or                                    bridge railings. More than 50 Chesterfield residents and knitters from as far away as Virginia                                                           collaborated to create the nearly 300 square feet of yarn "blankets" needed to decorate public objects around the sculpture site in Chesterfield Central Park.

Established in 1995, Chesterfield Arts brings the "experience" of art to the community. Opportunities include diverse programming in the visual, performing and literary arts, outdoor sculpture, and arts education classes taught by professional artists. The Gallery at Chesterfield Arts, 444 Chesterfield Center across from Chesterfield Mall, features work by regional artists. For more information, call 636.519.1955 or visit www.ChesterfieldArts.org.
