Where to Observe Black History Month at Libraries

February denotes national Black History Month. Following is a corresponding event schedule for St. Louis County library branches located in Central and West St. Louis County, including Eureka.

The story of Black History Month begins in Chicago during the late summer of 1915, according to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Following is a series of local events at which one can observe the annual observation. 


Monday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m.
African Inspired Jewelry Making Workshop

Come make your own African inspired jewelry with Imani Aisha Creations! In this 90-minute workshop, participants will be using the shapes of the Egyptian Ankh and Africa to make a necklace or a brooch. Paint will be used in the creation process, so please dress appropriately. Ages 7-11. Registration required.

Hitsville, USA: Motown
Remember The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and other Motown legends? Join us as Michael Cundiff, music historian, plays their music and gives us great background information. Adults. Registration required. 

Wednesday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m.
Lucky 7
This book club is designed just for 7-year-olds. Come for a really fun discussion and crafts or trivia. The book selection this month is "Amazing Grace" by Mary Hoffman. The book is available at the Grand Glaize Branch one month prior to the discussion. Age 7. Registration required.

Wednesday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m.
Beyond Book Bites
Teens and tweens lead the book discussion meeting. This month's book selection is "Gifted Hands: the Story of Ben Carson" by Ben Carson. The book is available one month prior to the discussion at the Grand Glaize Branch. Ages 11-15. Registration required.

This presentation explores the pivotal year of 1968 in Jamaica, where a new music was taking over: reggae. KDHX DJs Ital-K and Michael Kuelker will discuss reggae from the roots to the fruits, focusing on 1968 as a year of musical birth and cultural ferment.

Friday, Jan. 25, 7-9 p.m.

"Who Did It? The Three Little Pigs" by Tre'von Griffith presented by the Black Rep
This lively and entertaining show offers a contemporary twist on a classic tale, and also features original music by Tre'von. Afterward enjoy an inspiring puppet ministry by the Antioch Baptist Church as well as a variety of refreshments provided by a local African American restaurant.
