Chesterfield Mayor Voices Concern Over Dual Outlet Malls

He's worried that two outlet malls may be one too many.

Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger recently told KDSK he is worried about the competing efforts to construct two new outlet malls in the area.

The two developments, Taubman Prestige Outlets and St. Louis Premium Outlets, are planned to open next fall and would be only about five miles apart. Together, they would add more than 600,000 square feet of retail space.

Geiger said he is glad to see the interest in opening new businesses but added that it might be more than the region's consumers are capable of supporting.

The report was also picked up by the St. Louis Business Journal and contrasts statements from the two companies, which have both said they expect their respective commercial ventures to do well.

The mayor's statement is just the latest part of the continuing efforts to bring new commercial development to the Chesterfield Valley. Check out some of Chesterfield Patch's previous coverage for more information:

Maybe something should have been done sooner to stop this from happening. The big boys are up and building and nothing is going to stop them now. There goes another big chunk of Chesterfield's precious green space.....all for the mighty dollar.

I live in two areas of the country--Chesterfield and Colorado. In CO, our outlet malls are 30 to 50 (or more) miles apart, and they're half vacant because of the economy. The last several times I was in Chesterfield Mall there were many vacant storefronts and very few people in the malls shopping. Not only do we not nedd TWO outlet malls, we don't even need ONE! Re-tool the mall or add a strip onto the existing retail in the Valley and be done, but it's too little too late now!

I agree with everything that has been mentioned. I think this is a decision that will come back and haunt the city...

There's nothing that Swedish furniture can't solve, right?
