Heavy Rains Cause Late Growing Season for Local Producers

While this year's abundance of spring rains is preferable to last summer's historic drought, all that moisture means local growers got a late start.

At the Rombach's Farm produce stand in Chesterfield Valley, Marcia Rombach said their first batches of crops are just now ready for harvest.

On Tuesday, they put out bucketfuls of squash, but Rombach said the real draw is their tomatoes. They put in about 400 plants that will be ripening any day now.

"Everybody waits for our tomatoes because they are incredible," she said.

She attributed it to the fertile soil of the Chesterfield Valley, adding that it is internationally known for its richness.
