State Warns of Layoffs at Sears and Mercy Health

Layoffs likely linked to Sears closing stores; Mercy Health owned by Maryland-based Coventry Health.

The state has warnings that in St. Louis County and Coventry Health Care Inc. will lay off 65 here and another 85 in southwest Missouri, according to Patch blogger and contributor Brian R. Hook.

Coventry Health acquired Mercy Health here in 2010, and Group Health Plan in St. Louis, in 1989. It's based in Maryland now.

Sears announced at year's end that it was closing up to 120 Sears and Kmart stores, including the Crestwood Sears. It cited sales only half of the prior year.

More than 350 workers overall would be impacted by layoffs statewide from a variety of companies, according to the state notices.

The WARN Act notice filings, requires employers to provide a 60-day notice in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs. The information is listed with the Missouri Department of Economic Development.
