Mercy officials said the building design would take advantage of sunlight for the anticipated extensive use of computer screens and images used in telemedicine.

In other words, specialist doctors and nurses would be examining patients from afar via detailed images on computer screens, to determine treatment and condition of patients. Telemedicine is an advantage for those needing out-of-town experts, or in emergencies when expert opinion may be needed swiftly.

Mercy experts said they expected shovels in the ground on the new venture within the next six months.

The health care company plans also included expanding into St. Charles, with a hospital.
