The Taubman Prestige Outlet Mall, one of two outlet malls currently under construction in Chesterfield off of Highway 40, will open ahead of schedule a portion of the mall on Aug. 2, 2013, just in time for the back-to-school, tax-free weekend.
The opening of phase 1 of the mall, , will include approximately 80 stores in 310,000 square feet of space. Phase 2, set to open for the Spring of 2014, will include an additional 140,000 square feet of property and approximately 30 to 40 new stores.
“This year, we noticed how the back-to-school holiday was the No. 2 busiest shopping day of the year, so we sat down with all of our contractors and asked, ‘Can this be done?’ said Karen MacDonald, Taubman’s Director of Communication. “They said, ‘Why not?’ So we are very thrilled.”
MacDonald said the mall will offer many unique amenities, including its feature of “dog friendliness.”
Dogs, MacDonald said, will be allowed inside many stores—except food courts—and owners will find resting stations to give water to their canines throughout the mall.
“That and many other features will make us an attractive destination for people everywhere,” MacDonald said.
MacDonald said she was not worried about the second mall being built right next door, St. Louis Premium Outlets, nor about the already existing Chesterfield Commons mall across the street.
“Our malls throughout the United States have become one of the most visited destinations of the state where they are built,” MacDonald said of Taubman Centers Inc., based in Bloomfield, Mich.. “We will attract people from everywhere and put Chesterfield on the map.”
MacDonald said her company expects to add 750 construction jobs and approximately 1,200 permanent job with the mall. They also expect to generate sales of approximately $175 to $200 million and tax revenues of more than $14 million.
St. Louis Premium Outlets also adjusted their opening date from October 2013 to September 2013.
