Butterfly House Offers Year-Round Internship Opportunities for Students

The unpaid positions cover a variety of skills and fall into five categories: education, guest and volunteer services, horticulture, insect keeper, special events.

Nature lovers, future biologists and college students take note -- the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield is offering several year-round internship positions.

The not-for-profit organization is located in Faust Park and since its establishment in 1995 has become a star attraction in the area, offering special events, education programs and the chance to witness butterflies in two habitats, one native and one tropical.

Internships at the Butterfly House fall into one of five categories and require a variety of skills, from horticulture and entomology to education and public relations. The organization’s website provides further details:

Our internship program offers a unique hands-on learning opportunity in a beautiful setting. All interns have direct contact with our visitors and have the opportunity to educate in a non-formal environment. While assisting the Butterfly House staff, interns will do a project related to their area that is beneficial to the intern and the Butterfly House. All internships are part time and unpaid.

Basic internship requirements:

  • 140-hour minimum commitment (will adjust to meet school requirements)
  • Related coursework or experience in area of internship
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • High school seniors entering college in the fall are accepted on a case-by-case basis

Internships are available in most areas and are available year round. Applications must be received six weeks prior to proposed start date.
