Chesterfield Pol 'Fascinated' By Eagles

Veterans Day: Local politician joins an Iraq War veteran in releasing an eagle from captivity.

Soldiers, politicians and spectators gathered at a Missouri American Water facility Friday morning to watch a unique event for our area: the release of a bald eagle from captivity.

Staff Sgt. Kristy Willis of the Missouri National Guard’s 1175th Military Police Company released the bird. She said a close friend called her one day, offering her the chance to send the eagle on its way. The opportunity was something she had never done before.

“This is my first,” she said. “(I’m) pretty excited.”

Sen. Jane Cunningham (R-Chesterfield) joined the early event.

Cunningham said she’s always had a fascination with eagles. Her Jefferson City office has a bronze eagle statue, along with two photographs a constituent gave her of a rehabilitated bird named “Patriot.”

World Bird Sanctuary brought the eagle to be released in Maryland Heights. Missouri American Water and World Bird Sanctuary partnered to sustain wildlife habitates across the state.

The bald eagle was named the emblem of the U.S. by early founders of the nation, a symbol of pride, determination and strength.

Releasing the 7-month-old bald eagle into the wild was only part of the event. Missouri American Water also presented soldiers with a check, to go toward the VA hospital.

Susan Moynihan, new business supervisor for Missouri American Water, said American Water had a national contest earlier this year for a $500 prize.

Missouri American Water won that prize with a video showing employees collecting personal items for veterans. Their own company matched the funds after they won, bringing the donation up to $1,000.

Organizers didn’t neglect a Veterans Day observance. Missouri American President Frank Kartmann thanked the veterans for their service and said their work allows Americans to live free.

Rep. Mary Nichols (D-Maryland Heights) and Maryland Heights Mayor Mike Moeller also came out to the event.Related Topics: Bald Eagle, Missouri National Guard, and Veterans Day
