Chesterfield Worker Sues After Accidental Shooting

The "St. Louis Post-Dispatch" reports the insurance worker is suing the security guard and gun maker for lost wages and medical expenses.

A man who was accidentally shot in the leg in his Chesterfield office has filed a lawsuit against the security guard whose gun fired when it was dropped, as well as the gun maker. 

Ian Cornett was shot at the insurance company where he works at 390 South Woods Mill Rd. on the morning of Feb. 3. that the security guard was carrying his gun out of its holster when he dropped it. The incident was classified as an accidental discharge of a gun.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Cornett is suing security guard Jack Kellogg and the gun maker, Sig Sauer Inc. The suit was filed April 27 in St. Louis County Circuit Court.

The suit says Cornett was shot in the left thigh, damaging his abilty to work and move. According to the Post-Dispatch report, Cornett had about $10,000 in medical expenses and $3,000 in lost wages. He's seeking $25,000 from both Kellogg and Sig Sauer.

The suit says Kellogg didn't secure the loaded gun and didn't have the safety feature engaged. It also claims the gun was defective because it fired when the trigger was not pulled.
