Ruptured Gas Main Ignites Blaze In West End

Crews wet down buildings to deter fire spread.

A fire that began around 2 p.m. in St. Louis' West End area was extinguished Thursday by about 7 p.m., after fire crews worked to contain the gas-fueled blaze.

Thirty-five firefighters and crews from Laclede Gas worked, digging trenches around two gas lines in the area in order to clamp them shut, and end the flow of gas through the ruptured main.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, firefighters from St. Louis and  responded shortly before 3 p.m. on Thursday to reports of a gas leak and fire in the 5600 block of Enright Avenue.

St. Luke's Plaza Apartments were evacuated, since the fire was across the street from the complex.
