Get Out: Play With Fire at Glass Demonstration or Check Out New Art Gallery

Your weekend planner for March 17 through 20.

Opening reception for “Transitions,” a gallery featuring Eric Nichols
When: Artist talk and demonstration from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday. Reception from 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: , 444 Chesterfield Center
Why go: Check out the newest gallery at Chesterfield Arts, which features painting, printmaking, digital imagery, drawing and wood panels that project from the wall. The gallery will be open until May 14. Read more about Nichols’ art on the Chesterfield Arts website. 
Cost: Free.

Third Friday at Third Degree Glass Factory 
When: 6 to 10 p.m. Friday
Where: Third Degree Glass Factory, 5200 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis
Why go: Watch glassblowers work their magic in live demonstrations, or try your hand and making a paperweight, fused jewelry, a spring tile or torch beads with help from instructors. At 8 p.m. Maple Jam takes the stage to play acoustic rock and blues. Choreographed fire spinning performances will happen at 8 and 9 p.m. Plus, two art galleries will open, one with art that focuses on the power of nature and the other featuring vibrant, life-like glass lizards and insects. If that’s not enough, you can even eat there! Tapas-style small plates will be available for $2 to $8.
Cost: Free. If you choose to make a glass project, prices range from $20 to $30.

CANstruction Competition 
When: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit opens Friday and runs through March 27.
Where: Exploradome lobby, St. Louis Science Center, 5050 Oakland Ave., St. Louis
Why go: This annual communitywide food drive combines a design competition with charity. Teams have designed and tested their structures built out of cans. On Saturday, judges will select winners in categories such as “best use of labels” and “best meal.” You can even vote for your favorite by donating a canned good. The awards will be presented at a gala on March 28 and the winners go on to compete at the national competition. If you donate a can of food, you get $1 off admission to any Omnimax film.

Summer Children’s Consignment Sale 
When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday
Where: , 17815 Wild Horse Creek Road
Why go: This huge consignment sale will feature gently used or new spring and summer clothes for babies through teens. Maternity clothes will be on sale, too. Plus there’s shoes, toys, books, games, sporting equipment, furniture and more. Every thing is about 1/3 of retail prices and items will be organized to make for easy shopping. Credit cards, debit cards, cash and check accepted.
Cost: Free to enter

Try It Out Trapeze 
When: 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday
Where: Bumbershoot Aerial Arts, 2200 Gravois Ave., St. Louis
Why go: This weekly class is open to anyone who’s curious about the trapeze. You will learn a few basic moves and no experience is necessary. You can register at 314-898-3259, but walk-ins are welcome, too. Ages 13 and up. Anyone under 18 needs a signed insurance waiver from a parent or guardian to participate.
Cost: Free
