Clean up Missouri Litter, Adopt a Highway

Groups or organizations can sponsor a highway in the St. Louis area and pay a private group to clean up litter on their behalf. Find out how MoDOT is coordinating this effort.

The following information was provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation in news release.

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Sponsor-A-Highway program offers Missourians a way to help with litter clean-up and make a difference in our state. Anheuser-Busch has joined this effort by sponsoring a section of I-55 near Arsenal to remove litter and keep this south St. Louis City area clean.

Who:  Leaders from Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Services of America, Inc., the Missouri Department of Transportation and Anheuser-Busch will discuss the significance of the Sponsor-A-Highway program. These leaders will showcase the new highway signs located on both directions of I-55.

What:  MoDOT offers an environmentally friendly program to help maintain a clean and litter-free community within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The Sponsor-A-Highway program, which complements MoDOT’s current Adopt-A-Highway program, offers one more way for citizens to clean up Missouri. Groups or organizations can sponsor a highway in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas and pay a private group, Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Services of America, Inc., to do litter cleanup and other services on their behalf.

Where:  The press conference will begin promptly at 10 a.m., June 4, on the Sidney Street Bridge over I-55 in south St. Louis City with the media and public invited to attend.
Directions:  Take I-55 northbound to Arsenal. Go straight on the side street which is considered 13th Street (Anheuser-Busch is located on the right side). Follow that all the way down to Sidney Street. Make a left and park near bridge.

Why: “MoDOT spends approximately $6 million annually to clean up litter, and that doesn’t include the efforts of our adopters,” Stacy Armstrong, MoDOT roadside management, said. “And we still have litter. This program costs taxpayers nothing and will mean cleaner roadsides for us all. It’s all about cleaning up the trash.”
