Elderly Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Clarkson Road

Police said victim was resident of Fountains of West County retirement community on Clayton Road.

An 81 year-old man from Ellisville died this weekend after being struck by a car while walking across Clarkson Road.

Leo Ellinger was about 400 feet south of Clayton Road on Clarkson Road crossing the street from east to west when he was struck by a northbound Cadillac STS. The driver stopped.

It was about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Ellinger died at 10:52 p.m.

An ambulance had taken Ellinger, who sustained severe head trauma, to Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur.

Police said the driver, a 68 year-old man, was driving the posted speed limit of 35 mph.

The driver said he did not see Ellinger, who was wearing dark clothing. The driver will not face criminal charges.

Ellinger was a resident of the Fountains of West County retirement community, located at 15826 Clayton Road in Ellisville, about a quarter-mile east of where he was struck.
