Man Charged With DWI After Checkpoint Stop in Chesterfield

A checkpoint in Chesterfield helped catch one man who now faces his third charge of driving while intoxicated, Chesterfield police said.

William Ryan Spence, 31, of the 2000 block of King Arthur Court in St. Louis County north of Creve Coeur, was charged with DWI as a persistent offender. Spence has two previous DWI convictions.

Chesterfield police said Spence was stopped at a DWI checkpoint at 11:55 p.m. Sept. 13 on eastbound Olive Boulevard near River Valley Drive. An officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol on the defendant, who did poorly on a sobriety test.

Officers obtained a search warrant to draw blood from Spence.

Spence posted a $5,000 bond and was released from St. Louis County jail Sept. 14.
