Owner Cited for Leaving Dog Unattended in Vehicle on Hot Day

The pet was left for about 20 minutes, police said, on a Aug. 1 in the Chesterfield Mall parking lot.

A dog left in a car on a hot day in Chesterfield Mall earlier this month was uninjured, but Chesterfield police cited the canine’s owner for violating city ordinances that prohibit leaving pets in vehicles unattended.

Police said the 46-year-old woman left her dog for about 20 minutes, beginning at around 4:05 p.m. on Aug. 1, according to witness accounts of the incident. The high for the day hovered around 88 degrees.

Pet owners will want to know that even a quick run in and out of a store could land you a fine. The ordinance stipulates that an animal cannot be left alone in a vehicle for any period of time.

It’s also not the first person police have cited this summer. A 56-year-old male was also fined for a similar incident at S. Outer 40 Road and W. Chesterfield Parkway July 24.
