Police Catch 1 Drunk Driver, 1 Fugitive During DWI Crackdown

Chesterfield Police's DWI Checkpoint initiative will continue through the month of September.

The Chesterfield Police Department has released results of their August DWI checkpoint initiative.

From Aug. 17 – Sept. 3, Chesterfield police increased patrols and set up DWI checkpoints throughout the city in efforts to crack down on impaired drivers.

During that period, officers issued a total of 36 traffic tickets including:

  • 1 driving while intoxicated;
  • 24 speeding tickets;
  • 11 other traffic violations
  • And one fugitive arrest was made as a result of the crackdown.
Even though only one intoxicated driver was stopped, Chesterfield Police Chief Ray Johnson said Chesterfield streets were safer thanks to the crackdown.

“When we remove a drunk driver from the roads, we’re all safer,” Johnson said in a press statement.  “Law Enforcement will continue to encourage drivers to make a simple, smart choice to drive sober.”

Chesterfield police will continue their DWI crackdown during the month of September.

“Inconvenience to motorists will be minimal,” said Capt. Steven Lewis in a release. “Those officers participating in the enforcement effort have had additional training in the recognition of motorists who have had too much to drink or are under the influence of illegal drugs. Officers will also issue citations for seat belt and other violations.”
