Police Suspect More Schnucks Fraud Cases Have Hit Residents

The latest report from the Chesterfield police shows 17 credit card fraud cases in a week's time.

Just a few days after Schnucks supermarkets announced that it had found and contained the cause of a breach in customers' credit card information, the fallout is still showing up in police reports, according to Chesterfield police.

In the latest round of police incidents from the week of March 27 through April 2, police reported 17 incidents involving fraudulent credit card purchases.

"We have had an increase in fraud reports these past few weeks," said Chesterfield police spokesman Officer Mike Ryffel. "We believe the increase is due to the Schnucks security breach."

The supermarket chain announced last weekend that a breach in the company's computer system had been caused by a cyberattack and had resulted in the loss of customers' credit card information. Reports began to appear in communities around the St. Louis area of fraudulent purchases made on the credit cards of Schnucks customers.

The company was working with the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service to investigate and contain the breach. No one has been arrested or charged in connection with the breach at this point.

While Ryffel said the number of credit fraud cases lately in Chesterfield was unusual, "we have to investigate each case individually before we can make that call (that they are Schnucks-related). We recommend everyone keep an eye on their credit accounts as well as check their credit reports regularly."
