Taste for Fine Wine Behind Grocery Store Shoplifts

Chesterfield police are investigating two cases of theft that involve substituting a cheaper bottle of wine for a more expensive one at a self-service checkout.

Chesterfield police are investigating a series of thefts from the area's grocery stores that involve some quick hands at the self-service checkout.

After scanning a bottle of wine, the thirsty thief then substituted a more expensive selection in its place, police said. An investigation is ongoing, but police described the suspect as a 41-year-old male who has performed the scam at least twice.

The first instance occurred sometime between the afternoon of May 13 and the morning of May 14 at the Schnucks off of Olive Boulevard with the second taking place sometime between May 15 and June 2 at the Dierbergs on Clarkson Road.

According to police reports, the theft from Dierbergs exceeded more than $500 in value while the Schnucks take valued less than $500.
