Chesterfield's City Council recently passed an ordinance that will allow the city to bill parents and homeowners for the cost of police who are sent to break up an unruly party.

Yesterday approved an . Supporters of the law hope that a stiffer penalty will make parents think twice about letting their underage teens have parties where drugs or alcohol can stir up unruly behavior.

City officials did not offer an estimate of what the cost could be and did not respond to phone call made by Patch. The ordinance said that “responsible parties” could be charged for the salary and benefits of emergency personnel while they are responding to the call. They can also charge the responsible party for medical costs if emergency crews are injured while on the case.

A notable case in Australia where 500 wild young people gathered cost the parents almost $20,000 after police brought in helicopters and dogs to break up the raucous event.
