Flood of 1993: Chesterfield Valley, Before and After

On the 20th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1993, check out a photo comparison of the Valley then and now.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1993, during which a surging Missouri River busted through the earthen levee protecting the Chesterfield Valley and submerged its businesses, homes and farms.

Patch has been sharing the memories of some of the individuals who lived through the experience and then stuck around to help rebuild the area afterwards.

Now, on the same week as the flood's anniversary, a massive retail development, Taubman Prestige Outlets is set to open Friday in the shadow of the improved Chesterfield-Monarch Levee. In fact, the outlet mall backs up right against the barrier and will have a parking lot that provides access to the trail that runs on top of it.

To help illustrate the dramatic changes between the area then and now, check out the two aerial photos displayed above that show the Valley shortly after the flood and how it looked in 2009.

You can also learn more about how the area surged back in the aftermath of the flood by watching this awesome video produced to mark the 10th anniversary.
