New City Council Assignments Revealed

Chesterfield incumbents sworn in post-election.

After municipal Judge Rick Brunk swore in four incumbent councilmembers Wednesday night atPresident Pro Tem Michael Casey announced committee assignments for the new year (based on the election April 3.).

Committees are created from among the city's eight councilmembers (two from each ward.) Committees are on specific topics.

Chairpersons of city committees like finance, and planning, typically carry the lion's share of work among council members. The teams meet separately from the monthly council meetings, and make recommendations to the council at large, for action.

Committee Chairs:

  • Randy Logan—Planning and Public Works
  • Matt Segal—Finance and Administration
  • Bob Nation—Parks and Recreation
  • Derek Grier—Public Health and Safety

However, paid city staff typically does the research, presentations and legwork on every issue before the city, to little acclaim.

The city council is an elected, political body that ultimately decides up or down on issues prepared for vote by city staff.

The city is divided into four sections, or wards. Councilmembers re-elected and sworn into office Wednesday night:

  • Barry Flachsbart, Ward 1 (won over David Arbogast)
  • Elliot Grissom, Ward 2 (won over Tania Pappas)
  • Michael Casey, Ward 3 (no opponent)
  • Connie Fults, Ward 4 (no opponent)

Taxpayers supplied refreshments for a reception after the swearing-in. 

Mayor Bruce Geiger was absent, with officials saying he had the flu. Council member Randy Logan was absent.
