"Crews will need to blast and then clear any rock from the roadway before reopening the interstate," officials said.

MoDOT is urging drivers to use alternate routes and adjust travel times during the lane closures.

"Motorists should avoid I-270 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays if possible," MoDOT said in a press release.

MoDOT has also increased signage around the work zones in an effort to make motorists more aware of the interstate closures and traffic delays.

Driver Ronald Schuh, 37, was killed on the first day of blasting rock when another driver changed lanes in the work zone, clipped his car, which sent it into a work vehicle parked on the side of the road and flipped it onto the rocks.

The lane closings are set to continue weekdays throughout the summer.

The construction is weather permitting.
