Washington University Lifelong Learning Institute Coming to Chesterfield

A course on the Dead Sea Scrolls will be offered this spring at city hall. The class is part of a new alliance with the city and the institute in response to recommendations from the Older Adult Task Force.

The following information was provided by the City of Chesterfield.

One of the first steps the Chesterfield Mayor and City Council are taking in answer to the Older Adult Task Force recommendations is a new alliance with the Life Long Learning Institute. The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Washington University offers a wide variety of courses at its Clayton location that emphasizes peer learning and active class participation by senior adults.

Starting on April 3, a course will be taught at Chesterfield City Hall at 690 Chesterfield Parkway West on Wednesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon for eight weeks. This course, “The Dead Sea Scrolls,” will be facilitated by Sheldon Enger and will focus on the collection of ancient documents discovered in caves near the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea Scrolls contain not only the earliest known texts of the Jewish Bible (“Old Testament”), but Jewish texts from the third century BCE through 68 CE. In this course participants will discuss the more significant insights gained from publishing the scrolls. Mr. Enger is a popular instructor and this course sold-out when previously offered. The cost of the 8-week course is $145.

All LLI courses are peer-taught—and the courses offered are not for credit and there are no exams and no grades. Nevertheless, all members of this learning community actively participate in the learning experience.
