Webster Groves Adds Wreath Walk and Reindeer to Make the Season Bright

If the warmer weather is throwing you off, Webster Groves has some new city decorations to get you in the holiday mood.

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen...but maybe not the 50 wooden reindeer dashing through the business districts of Webster Groves.

After six trees had to be cut down to make way for a road improvement project on Garden Avenue earlier this fall, the City of Webster Groves made it a priority to find a way to recycle the tree components.

"We know it's important to repurpose and recycle," said Shawnell Faber, Webster Groves parks manager. "We also happened to be pondering what to do for fun holiday decorations."

Faber told Patch the reindeer were a "united effort," created by artist Yvonne Steingruby and with the aid of a crew going through tree pieces to find the best match for different parts of the reindeer.

"Some of the reindeer must have arthritis -- their knees are so knobby," Faber joked with Patch.

The reindeer are paired with 50 holiday wreaths on display throughout the business districts and on Elm and Lockwood Avenues for the Webster Wreath Walk. The wreaths are themed and featured in front of businesses through Dec. 31.

What do you think? Have you seen the reindeer and wreaths? Do you think it's a good repurpose project? Which is your favorite? Tell us in the Comments.

The reindeer are really cool! I think they did a great job picking out pieces of the tree to fit just right.

I think the reindeer are great! They are very cheery, and they are also a great example of how recycling and repurposing can involve fun and decorative projects! Kudos to Shawnell and her crew!
