Dogs Sniff for Drugs at Parkway Central High

The St. Louis County Police Department's Canine Unit visited the school this morning for the first time and searched hallway lockers and restrooms.

The following information was sent to parents with students at Parkway Central High School from Principal Tom McCarthy.

Dr. Keith Marty, Superintendent of Parkway School District, announced last semester Parkway’s intent to use drug detecting canine units at the high school level this school year.  Our goal is simple: to ensure a safe, drug-free school environment for all students.  St. Louis County’s Canine Unit visited Central High School this morning for the first time.  I want to share with you the process used for the search:

  • An email was sent to staff just prior to the search.  Teachers were asked to keep students in classrooms and focused on their course work.
  • Administrators were positioned throughout the building to limit hallway traffic.  The canine unit proceeded to search hallway lockers and restrooms.
  • At no time did the canine unit have direct contact with students or faculty.
  • At the end of the block I made a PA announcement to: inform students of the search, reiterate the importance of school being a drug-free zone and invite them to ask any questions they might have to Officer Evans, a grade level administrator, or me.

The physical and emotional safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance.  We will continue to consider and take necessary measures to ensure a positive and safe learning environment for all students.  Thank you for your support and please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
