UMSL Hosts 2nd Annual Girls’ Leadership Camp

University of Missouri St. Louis offers the following event description:

The University of Missouri-St. Louis Executive Leadership Consortium is hosting its second annual summer camp for high school young women, rising freshman to seniors, June 26 – 29, 2011. The camp last year was very well received and this year promises to be even better, according to organizers.  For one, it will be a different program so high school students who participated last time can attend and have another great summer camp experience.  Eighty-eight high school young women participated last year and 125 are expected to attend this year.

This is a fun-filled program for girls to explore educational benefits and options after high school including learning about different majors and career and leadership opportunities.  The emphasis on girls being aware of opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) will continue to be a part of the camp, but also girls will learn about the more traditional female occupations, such as education, nursing and social work.

The camp will be filled with energetic hands-on activities and multimedia presentations, emphasizing real-world, practical learning experiences.  Girls will meet and learn from college students, faculty and staff about college readiness and be introduced to successful professional women across various fields.  Also, girls will be involved in leadership exercises to increase their skills, knowledge and abilities.

Because parents play such a key role in their daughters’ educational choices, the camp will also have programs for parents about post-secondary opportunities, including financial aid, scholarships and affordability.

“I can’t think of anything more important than preparing students for a better future,” said Malaika Horne, director, UMSL Executive Leadership Consortium.  “Campers will have great fun with their peers, but more importantly, they will learn about taking charge of their on-going success.”

The primary purpose of the UMSL Executive Leadership Consortium is to expose students to leaders to become effective leaders to meet current and future demands in response to regional, state, national and international needs.
