Florissant Cop Remains Critical After Parking Lot Ambush

Florissant police officer hospitalized with three gunshots wounds.

 remained in critical but stable condition in DePaul Hospital Tuesday.

Vernon, 33, was ambushed by a gunman from a dumpster, after he got out of his police car in a Florissant parking lot. He was investigating a possible burglarly.

Police said they have a suspect in custody. Brian Cannon Jr. was charged Monday with assault in the first-degree of a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and second-degree burglary.

Police said the officer was hit in the shoulder, leg and chest. Five bullets were fired at him.

Police said Tuesday at a press conference that Cannon confessed to the shooting.

He is being held in St. Louis County Justice Center on $500,000 cash-only bond.
