Friday's High School Football: Parkway Central Hosts Struggling Northwest

Northwest will be hard-pressed to notch its first win of this season when the Lions play at Parkway Central (2-0) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

The Parkway Central Colts (2-0) will likely give the Northwest Lions all they can handle this Friday as the teams meet at 7 p.m. at Parkway Central in a nonconference matchup.

In its first two games, Parkway Central’s defense has surrendered less than 200 yards on the ground, while Northwest has allowed 496.

The Colts’ offense has racked up 673 yards while Northwest has gained just 272. Parkway Central has scored 73 points as Northwest is stuck on seven.

However, comparing Parkway Central and Northwest squads at this point may not be apples to apples.

Parkway Central started the season playing a Ladue squad that has yet to win in 2011, and a Seckman squad that hasn’t posted a winning season in the past four years.

The Lions, on the other hand, drew two of the area’s toughest teams to start the season in Mehlville and St. Louis University High.

So, the jury is still out on the Colts, and it may be awhile before it returns with a firm verdict.

But Parkway Central has a tough schedule coming up in the second half of the season, when the Colts face Kirkwood, Parkway North and Webster Groves.

Leading the attack for the Colts will be senior Brandon Sheperd, who poses a threat on both sides of the ball. Already with eight touchdowns, including five rushing and three receiving, Sheperd also boasts 13 tackles as a defensive back.

The Lions feature quarterback Adnan Al Amami and wide receiver Nick Wideman, who stand out as defensive backs, as well. Northwest relies on running back Kenny Stibor, who been stifled in two games with 75 yards in 37 carries.

Northwest Players to Watch Friday:

—Senior (No. 7) Nick Wideman, WR/DB
3.7 yards per carry, 26 rushing yards
2 receptions, 93 yards
13 tackles

—Junior (No. 3) Adnan Al Amami, QB/DB
6-for-23, 136 yards, 3 interceptions
9 tackles / 1 interception
