Popsicles Beat the Heat at Green Trails Elementary Gathering

Other Parkway elementary schools will also host meet-and-greet activities before the first day of school, Aug. 16.

Even with a breeze, it was a sweltering 100°F at the Popsicles with Principals gathering at on Wednesday.  Dozens of giddy youngsters and their parents attended the event in spite of the heat. The get-together gives kids a chance to reunite with friends and begin thinking about a new school year.

Elise and Brenna McLain, two-thirds of a set of triplets, finished their popsicles with nary a drop on their chins. Both girls had a busy summer with cooking classes and reading but were excited to be starting second grade. Their brother Nick attends .

The Perry children, Rylie and Gavin, were ready for school. "Summer has been fun," Rylie said. "We went to Galveston and got hermit crabs for pets, but I miss my friends."

"I get to eat lunch at school," said Gavin, who will be in kindergarten.

As she slurped the last dribbles of a popsicle, Hannah Gao seemed more excited about her upcoming birthday than school. "I went to summer school, to Cardinals Mania class and to drama camp. And it's my birthday in three days," she said.

"This event was started by Green Trails' previous principal and the event is in its seventh year," said Rene Sommers, who has been at the school for six years. She was ready for school to begin, too. "Today I told the staff that this place is much more fun when the kids are here."
