Student Transfer Requests Coming to Parkway, Rockwood

Parents in the failing Riverview Gardens and Normandy School Districts have until August 1 to file transfer requests.

With less than a week left before an August 1 deadline for parents in the unaccredited Normandy and Riverview Gardens School Districts to file transfer requests, we have a better idea now of how those students could impact the Parkway and Rockwood School Districts.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch obtained data that, as of this past Wednesday, a total of 31 transfer requests to the two public school districts serving Chesterfield had come from the Riverview Gardens School district. Parkway was in the lead, with 25 requests, while Rockwood had much less, with only six requests.

Over in Normandy, the makeup was similar, with Parkway receiving 9 requests and Rockwood handling only two.

Howeve,r the dynamic has the potential to shift again, especially with the number of Riverview Gardens transfers. Administrators there selected Mehlville schools as the preferred district to provide free transportation for transfers. But because Mehlville will only be able to accept at most 200 Riverview Gardens students before butting up to class size projections, Riverview Gardens will need to select a second preferred district for transportation.

KMOV TV is speculating that the Parkway School District is likely one of only 2 candidates for the designation from Riverview Gardens.

It is up to the receiving school districts to decide which building a transfer student would be placed. Those students would be eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities, including Missouri State High School Activities Association-sanctioned sports.
