Student Transfers: How Many in Parkway and Rockwood?

Rockwood, Parkway and other districts have absorbed the impact of more than 2000 students from Riverview Gardens and Normandy schools.

With the year set to begin Aug. 13 for Rockwood schools, figures have been released reporting how many transfer students the district will receive from the Normandy and Riverview Gardens school districts.

According to updated figures from the Cooperating School Districts (CSD) released Aug. 7, a total of 102 students from the two unaccredited districts will be attending Parkway and 25 students will go to Rockwood.

The districts original estimations likely rose after Mehlville and Kirkwood (chosen by Riverview Gardens as the district they would pay transportation costs to) said they would be unable to house all of the 775 applicants they received.

According to a story from St. Louis Public Radio, the districts ended up jointly taking only about 352 students, so a lottery was instituted to place the remainder.

On Friday, CSD reported that it was still working to place families who arrived at the two unaccredited districts after the Aug. 1 transfer application date had passed.

The organization said it would provide a final number once the process has been completed.

In addition, KSDK and other news outlets are reporting that lawsuits could soon be filed to force Mehlville and Kirkwood, the districts identified by Riverview Gardens where transportation would also be provided, to accept all who requested a transfer.
