Suburban Journals: Gateway Academy to Close in May

The school's board of directors notified faculty, parents and staff with a letter.

The private Catholic school has faced financial problems. A March 10 letter from the school’s board of directors announced the closure to faculty, staff and parents.

The school is owned and operated by the Legion of Christ, the Suburban Journals reports. The Legion has struggled through the recession and cannot let Gateway Academy use the building rent free, said Jim Fair, director of communications with the Legion of Christ.

It’s not clear what will happen to the land and the building.

The school serves about 200 children in kindergarten through eighth grade, the Suburban Journals reports. Two years ago, the high school at Gateway Academy closed due to declining enrollment.
