Chesterfield Gymnast Heading to National Championship

Taylor Styer, 13, will compete in the 2013 Junior Olympic Championship in Portland, Ore., this week.

Chesterfield gymnast Taylor Styer will step on to the national stage this week when he competes in the 2013 Junior Olympic Championship, which runs April 30 through May 5 in Portland, Ore.

West Newsmagazine recently profiled the 13-year-old athlete, who qualified for the top competition after winning the Missouri Level 9 championship and then placing in the top 25 at a regional meet.

Styer moved to Missouri from New Jersey last fall and said he loves the feeling of flying through the air that comes with gymnastic feats.

He trains at the St. Louis Gym Centre in Webster Groves, according to his coach is Mike Filla, Styer’s best events are rings and parallel bars, the article stated. Filla added that Styer has great strength and is able to pull off maneuvers that can usually only be done by gymnasts several years older.
