Major League Baseball made it official Monday with the announcement of Parkway Central graduate Max Scherzer as the starting pitcher for the American League in Tuesday's All-Star Game, being played at Citi Field in Queens, NY. Here are five things you should know before sitting down to watch the game on FOX.

1. Stats

Scherzer is 13-1 with a 3.79 ERA. He's tied for the league lead in wins and his 152 strikeouts are good for second in the American League.

2. Schools

Scherzer is a graduate of Parkway Central High School and later starred at the University of Missouri.

3. Storyline

While Scherzer has excelled on the field, his performance under the pressure of off-field heartbreak is likely to get new attention by the national press corps in New York. Scherzer's brother Alex took his own life last summer. Max pitched just days after his brother's death and in the course of the rest of the season, helped guide the Detroit Tigers to a World Series berth.

He and his family spoke at length about what they endured, during a feature article in ESPN The Magazine.

4.  Heterochromia Iridum

Scherzer's eyes are different colors. According to IMDB, he shares the trait with other celebrities, including Mila Kunis, Dan Akroyd and Jane Seymour.

5. Against The Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals are sending a total of six players to the All-Star Game, as Edward Mujica was announced as a late replacement for Adam Wainwright, who pitched Sunday. Of the Cardinals' hitters representing the National League, Yadier Molina has had the most success against Scherzer, going 1 for 2 with 2 RBI.
