Cardinals see former player return, to help.

Former Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds is returning to the Redbirds as a "special assistant," NBC Hardballtalk reported Thursday.

Edmonds retired February 2011 at 41 years old from play, after signing a minor league contract with the Cardinals.

His new assignment is on the management side.

Edmonds played major league ball with the St. Louis team 2000-2007, joining the 2006 World Series win by the Cardinals with 4 RBIs, according to Wikipedia.

He was born in southern California in 1970.

Spring training starts Feb. 18 for the Cardinals, in Jupiter, FL, for the 2012 Season.
