Suburban South Roundup: Parkway West Hurdler Wins Two Conference Events

Nicole Douglas was one of three double-champions at the event.

The Suburban South Conference track meets were held last week with Kirkwood winning the girls meet and Parkway North winning the boys meet.

Kirkwood had three individual champions (Elisa Steele in the 400-meter dash, Hannah Richardson in the 800 and Sarah Viera in the pole vault).

There were three double-champions in conference. Parkway North's Amber Alexander won the high jump and triple jump. Chasity Jones of Webster Groves won the shot put and discus and Nicole Douglas of Parkway West won both hurdle events. Her teammate, Katherine Atwood, won the long jump.

University City and Rockwood Summit each had two champions. U. City shined in the sprints with Kayla Heidelberg winning the 100 and Erica Murphy the 200. Summit excelled in the distance events with Jenny Govero winning the 1,600 and Rebekah Lawson the 3,200.

R.J. Alexander won the 400 and 110-meter hurdles to lead the way for Parkway North in its boys title.

Webster Groves was second and Kirkwood finished third. Webster was led by conference champions Jimmy Rizzo, who won the 1,600, and LaJuan Moye, who won the high jump. Kirkwood's Quincy Sharp won both the 100 and 200.

Rockwood Summit's Matt McIntosh had one of the highlights of the meet as he won the pole vault, clearing 14 feet. Daniel Mazar was the other Falcon's champion, winning the 800.

Girls Soccer
The 2011 season has been a surprising and record-breaking one for the Kirkwood High School girls soccer team.

The Pioneers set a school record in 2010 with 14 victories. However, they did so with 12 seniors. But Kirkwood’s new-look team equaled their win total from last year with a 2-0 victory over Webster Groves High School last week.

The Pioneers have a chance to break the record on Monday with their final conference game against Seckman. They will get another shot Wednesday in the regular-season finale against Lindbergh High School and then again in districts, which open with another game against Webster Groves.

"Everyone thought that this was going to be a rebuilding season," Kirkwood coach Phil Cotta said. "We have just one senior and a foreign exchange girl on the team and are starting three freshmen."

Sophomore Maggie Schneider has been the big gun for Kirkwood with 24 goals. She is within sight of the school record of 26, which was set by Aimee Leeker in 1993.

"Maggie played two games on the JV last year and scored four goals," Cotta said. "We brought her up and she scored eight for us last year. She knows how to be in the right spot at the right time and can shoot with either foot. We thought she could score for us, but no way did we think she would score 24."

Kirkwood has a shot at winning only its second conference championship. The Pioneers, who switched to the Suburban South Conference this season, won the Suburban West Conference in 1993.

Kirkwood is 5-1 with the Seckman High School game remaining. Rockwood Summit High School is 4-1 with games remaining against Parkway Central High School and Parkway North High School. Summit High School does have the head-to-head advantage, having beaten Kirkwood 1-0 on April 5. Defense has been the stalwart for the Falcons this season as they have allowed only 14 goals in 18 games. Summit has given up just three goals in its past six games after a 4-1 loss to Cor Jesu.

Baseball
Seckman continued its perfect record in the conference last week with a pair of victories. The Jaguars defeated Kirkwood 5-2 on Tuesday and then blanked Parkway North, 8-0, on Thursday. The Jaguars entered the week with a 6-0 league mark. Parkway West High School is 5-1.

Golf
Several golfers from the conference earned spots in the state tournament at last week's Class 4 Sectional 1 meet at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, MO. The top two teams and top 15 individuals advanced to state.

No teams were able to advance, but five schools will be represented with one golfer each.

Robert Ray of Summit (78), Michael Becker of Webster (80) and Seckman’s Dylan Saxner (82) advanced. Poplar Bluff High School and Parkway South High School tied for the team title at sectionals and will head to state.

Parkway Central's William Melvin (89) was the lone conference golfer to make it from Class 4 Sectional 2 at Old Hickory. De Smet and Francis Howell advanced as teams from that sectional as De Smet's Nicholas Arman shot a 73 to win medalist honors by six strokes.

University City's Bryce Balber also made it to state in Class 3 as he finished 10th with an 83 at the Class 3 Sectional 2 Tournament, which was held at Aberdeen. Westminster Christian and Priory finished one-two in the sectional with Westminster's Kevin VandeKamp winning medalist honors with a two-over par 74.

The state golf tournaments will be held May 16 and 17. The Class 4 tournament will be at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield, MO, while the Class 3 Tournament will be at Silo Ridge in Bolivar, MO.

Patch Suburban South Girls Athlete of the Week
