Dog Days of Summer

Summer fun including art camps and the ice cream truck.

If you are over the age of 30, it is probably easy to remember summer vacation as long days outside - leaving the house at sunrise and coming home when the street lights came on...or maybe a little earlier to have dinner. Then, there was always the treat of the ice cream truck! You could hear the music from miles away.

Things have changed some since then, but I enjoy the thought that it is still so much the same. Kids are a little more likely to stay close to home and maybe watch t.v. or play the XBox for hours. However, the sound of the ice cream truck still brings the same reaction.

Last night, my daughter and I were at a friends' house swimming. As the ice cream truck started down the street, even from under the water, she could hear the music and the little smile of "please, can we get something?" popped up on her face. The sheer joy of knowing that treats abound is enough to melt even a stingy parents' heart a little.

Every day, here at Chesterfield Arts, I watch the kids coming in for camps - the light in their eyes, knowing that they get to create something new and exciting. The pottery camps have been filling our kilns with unicorns, wizards, bowls and so much more, while the painting and drawing camps have decorated the walls with still lifes, abstract paintings and even yummy looking food. Maybe painting or pottery isn't your thing...how about a cake decorating workshop?

We always feel like the days of summer are moving so quickly, but really, it's only June...there is still so much summer left and so many fun camps in which to participate...plus, the daily trip to the ice cream truck!
