Police: Former Parkway Student Likely Did Not Shoot Herself

Autopsy results show Ainsley Freeman and her mother, Amy Freeman Burton, were shot in the head. Both previously attended the Parkway School District.

Police said former Parkway School District student, 13-year-old Ainsley Freeman most likely did not shoot herself. Initial autopsy results show that Ainsley and her mom, 37-year-old Amy Freeman Burton, each died from one gunshot to the head. Although the official report is not yet available, and results are not yet conclusive, "evidence does suggest that Ainsley did not likely shoot herself," Lt. Jeff Bretzing said in a press release. (Read Previous Story: Two Ex-Parkway Students Shot to Death) Both Freeman Burton and her daughter Ainsley were found shot to death in their San Francisco area home Monday. They had reportedly moved there from the St. Louis area in December. Parkway School District spokesperson Cathy Kelly confirms both mother…

Thanks for that great question M.A. So I found out: The school built the classrooms and had them ready by 2011. This gym project will have no classrooms. They offer a tour of the school facility from time to time, and I'm adding a few photos to this article of the classrooms.   more ›

Parkway Schools OK Rooftop Solar Panels for Electricity

The configuration would be the largest statewide.

Thirty-three buildings, including every school in Chesterfield's Parkway district, would be outfitted with solar panels to generate energy for electricity, after a unanimous school board vote Wednesday night on a bid. "It's a win-win-win," Board President Beth Feldman said just prior to the vote. The Parkway District would lease the solar energy—or photovoltaic—system from Brightergy for $72,300 a year, over 20 years. The energy generated and converted would be 2.2 percent of the district's total annual electric use, according to Erik Lueders, the district's manager of sustainability and purchasing. According to district information, each of the 25 kilowatt systems atop the building would have a monitoring system, and could potentially be …

Parkway Central Music Program Swings

Middle school bands' concert Tuesday packed; two more concerts May 8 and 10.

Tuesday's band concert brought sounds much richer than the storied Music Man band to parents and siblings' ears in Parkway Central Middle School. The five bands of some 90 sixth-grade beginners performed in combinations of all-brass, flutes and percussion, all-clarinets, all-saxophones, and altogether. Paul Holzen and Jeff Pottinger share the duties of conducting, teaching, directing, auditioning, arranging and more. "I love it," Holzen said afterward in the lobby, where familes ate Ted Drewes famous frozen custard. Holzen said he's in his 22nd year with Parkway.  Holzen and his young muscians just came off a big win—being the only Parkway Middle School band ever to perform at the State Music Teaches Conference, in Lake of the Ozarks. They…

Yes, that crossed my mind too—so I'll clarify here—the band in the MOVIE Music Man begins to play in squawks and squeaks because they haven't had traditional music lessons before the performance. Life did not imitate art in the Parkway band concerts!   more ›

Parkway District Says Court OK To Nix Student Transfers

The ruling came down Tuesday.

A judge on Tuesday ruled in favor of the School District of Clayton in a widely watched case that deals with the transfer of students from unaccredited schools to accredited ones, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Quoting from the Post-Dispatch article: "Under the ruling, students from unaccredited school districts would not have the right to transfer to better school districts for free." (Read the complete Turner v. Clayton ruling issued Tuesday.) While Chesterfield's Parkway School District did not expect to be impacted much by students transferring to Parkway from poor-performing schools, a spokesman had this to say about the ruling: "We are pleased with the court's decision. Missouri needs to continue looking for ways to help …

Transfer to Parkway? Rockwood, Lindbergh, Clayton, Ladue (as well as others close to Parkway) are on the upswing and surpassing Parkway in many ways. Despite great kids, great teachers and staff, and engaged parents, the Parkway Board (run by Director Feldman) has been running a once great district into mediocrity. Look at MAP scores. More and more parents are looking to get their kids out of …   more ›

What's great is the awards give credit and overdue recognition to the talented stage crews, pit musicians, and all others that make a production great. Imagine a musical without music, sound, lighting, costuming, direction, etc. Good Luck Central!   more ›
