As his term draws to an end, outgoing Mayor Bruce Geiger looks back on the how far the city has come since forming in 1988.
In a column published in a recent edition of the city's official newsletter, the Chesterfield Citizen, outgoing Mayor Bruce Geiger reflected on Chesterfield's history and his time as an elected official. June 1, 1988. On that day, twenty five years ago, the City of Chesterfield became a reality. The St. Louis County Executive appointed the first Mayor and eight City Council members. There was no City Hall, no Police, Public Works or Parks & Recreation Department; no citizen committees, and just one employee, our City administrator, Mike Herring. Nor was there a mechanism in place to provide funds needed to sustain city operations. At the first City Council meeting, hundreds of ordinances, copied from St. Louis County, were read and …

A St. Louis County Official recently joked that combining the two cities would help end the debate over a sales tax sharing system that Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger says needs reform.
During a recent debate over the St. Louis County’s sales tax sharing system and its impact on cities such as Chesterfield, a county official fired off an unusual solution – “Chesterwild.” The remark from St. Louis County Chief Operating Officer Garry Earls came during the Progress 64 West luncheon Feb. 21 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Chesterfield, according to an article in West Newsmagazine. Earls, a supporter of the system, had been discussing it with Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger, a long-time opponent. At one point, Earl quipped that a merger of cities such as Chesterfield and Wildwood (which he dubbed “Chesterwild) made sense, claiming that a majority of people spending money in Chesterfield don’t actually live there. The context for …

The project also includes improvements to make getting on and off Highway 40 easier and will increase visibility for one of the developments.
The construction of a new span of the Daniel Boone Bridge could be a boon for Chesterfield's two outlet malls, St. Louis Premium Outlets and Taubman Prestige Outlets. Work on the project began with a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, and Chesterfield Public Works Directors Mike Geisel said he expects it will be improve access and mobility for both of the competing developments, according to a report in the St. Louis Business Journal. The new span will replace the original bridge, built in 1935, which will be demolished after it's completed. In addition, the project includes several improvements aimed at making it easier to get on and off Highway 40, including a new Chesterfield Airport Road interchange and a continuous fourth lane from …

Chesterfield's current Mayor Bruce Geiger said he is backing Councilman Matt Segal in his race against fellow Councilman Bob Nation to take over the position after he steps down in the spring.
Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger, who will be stepping down in April, has endorsed a fellow councilman who is running to take over the post. Geiger told Pactch he will be supporting Ward I councilman Matt Segal's bid to be the city's next mayor. Since Geiger's announcement that he would not seek re-election earlier this month, the race has become a contest between Segal and fellow councilman Bob Nation from Ward IV. However, with the deadline to file set for Jan. 15, there's still time for other candidates to register for the April 2 election. As of Dec. 26, Chesterfield City Clerk Judy Naggier reported that there had been no additional fillings. Geiger previously served as councilman for nearly 10 years and was elected as mayor two years…

I want to thank the residents of Ward two for allowing me to serve as your councilman for nearly ten years, and the residents of Chesterfield for the opportunity to represent you as Mayor these past two years. When I ran two years ago, I fully expected this would be the beginning of my campaign for my second term as Mayor. However, after much agonizing and careful thought, I…

The 2013 budget for the City of Chesterfield passed earlier this month doesn't factor in any additional sales tax revenue from the development of two outlet malls in Chesterfield Valley, both set to open in August.
With the two competing outlet malls in Chesterfield Valley racing to open next August, the city of Chesterfield is holding off on forecasting any increased tax revenue from the developments in its 2013 budget. That budget predicts salex tax revenues will rise 3 percent. St. Louis Premium Outlets and Taubman Presitge Outlets are both projecting August 2013 openings, but Chesterfield City Manager Mike Herring said they aren't being added to those calculations quite yet. "We will start being able to quantify the impact of those developments in the latter part of the year and then make any adjustments for the following fiscal year," Herring said. The outlet malls could possibly mean hundrends of thousands in additional revenue for the city …

Mayor Bruce Geiger has agreed to help lead an effort by some suburban St. Louis cities to change the current revenue-sharing system for a 1 percent county sales tax.
Chesterfield Mayor Bruce Geiger is once again leading an effort by several regional mayors and administrators to change St. Louis County's system of sharing sales tax revenue. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Fenton Mayor Dennis Hancock hosted a meeting Nov. 30 with representatives from eight suburban municipalities, including Chesterfield. During the meeting, Geiger agreed to help lead the effort, which will require any changes to be adopted by the Missouri Legislation. The current system originally dates to 1977, when voters approved a 1 percent sales tax in St. Louis County. At that time, cities were either designated as "point-of-sale" cities or "pool" cities, the difference being that the former kept all of the revenue …

Outlet's pumpkin color walls were too much for Councilmember Fults.
A conference room at Chesterfield City Hall was jammed for a Planning and Public Works Committee meeting earlier this month, with pumpkin farms, outlet malls, snow, roads, and dump trucks on the agenda. But first, most cities have a Planning and Zoning Commission that makes recommendations to the City Council or Board of Aldermen on new developments and zoning issues. A good example of how this system is not supposed to work is the new Schnucks store on Clarkson Road at Kehr’s Mill. The Ballwin P&Z Commission voted against the Schnucks. But the Board of Aldermen ignored entirely their own Planning and Zoning Commission, and approved the store construction. (The Schnucks is in Ballwin, but the street is in Chesterfield, and across the …

I think Chesterfield and Wildwood should merge. Whiteywood, home of Jane Cunningham and Todd Akin sounds like a drawing card to the new city. Maybe Bigotfield or Nutchester to honor them? The Jane Cunningham Hall Elementary School where no lunches are served? The Todd Akin Legitimate Rape Health Center maybe? All city jobs could be staffed by 13 year olds. It is time we honored these forward …   more ›
