Citizen of the Year Fell in Love with Chesterfield as a Softball-Playing Teen

Joan Schmelig has been president of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce since 1982.

This week, Patch introduces you to Joan Schmelig, Chesterfield's 2010 Citizen of the Year and president of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Joan Schmelig has served as the president of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce since 1982. It would be fair to say she has raised the fledgling organization from its infancy. Now boasting more than 900 commercial, industrial, retail and professional firms, the chamber sponsors several events including the annual Concerts in Faust Park, the Business EXPO and Showcase and the annual Gumbo Flats Pumpkin Run. On a monthly basis, the chamber sponsors events to foster networking as well as professional development, all geared toward fostering the success of chamber member businesses. Their slogan, "…

Chesterfield City Council Honors Citizen of the Year

Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce President Joan Schmelig was named the city's 2010 Citizen of the Year.

She brought food to volunteers and kept lines of communication open during the flood of 1993. She's built the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce into the more than 900-member organization it is today. To many present at Monday's Chesterfield City Council meeting, she is one of the city's gems. Joan Schmelig, the president of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, was named the city's 2010 citizen of the year. "I am just very, very privileged—and I mean it from the bottom of my heart—to live, work and play here in Chesterfield," Schmeling said after accepting the award from Acting Mayor Barry Flachsbart.  Several people came forward to thank Schmeling for her service to the city. City, School Districts Seek Nominations for Community Awards

The City of Chesterfield, Parkway and Rockwood school districts all have upcoming deadlines for nominations for citizen awards.

About three weeks remain to nominate your neighbors for awards that recognize their outstanding service to the community or school district. The City of Chesterfield and Parkway and Rockwood school districts are currently accepting nominations for these annual awards. Chesterfield Citizen of the Year Deadline: Feb. 4 This award is designed to recognize a community member who has been actively involved in the city or has had an outstanding accomplishment in the last year, according to a press release. People can be nominated for volunteerism, work on community projects or other civic contributions. Ideally, the nominee lives in Chesterfield; if they don’t, their accomplishment should have taken place in the city. People who have been …
