Consumer are advised to throw out any cantaloupe grown in southwest Indiana.
A Schnucks spokesperson has confirmed their stores have pulled out cantaloupe from an area and a farm which have been identified as a likely source of a recent salmonella outbreak. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services issued the warning this week. It said Missouri has 12 confirmed cases of Salmonella Typhimurium according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cantaloupe grown in southwestern Indiana is the focus of the outbreak and consumers are advised to throw out cantaloupe from that area. It should be identified by a sticker on the cantaloupe. According to USA today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified Chamberlain Farms, in Owensville, as a source of the outbreak. Schnucks …

Charter execs who want to work from New York makes a lot of sense, unless you are a stockholder, employee and customer.
A trio of top cable TV executives were hired to save Charter Communications recently. Charter is a company that just a year ago a service truck was worth more than 50,000 shares of common stock. The trio is all from New York, having worked at Cablevision. They don’t want to move to St. Louis and want some of the current support staff to move to New York, where the plan to obtain office space in Manhattan. Here is some free advice to these big shots. Let’s look at the plusses and minus in this deal. Housing and costs You can buy a house three times as big as the one you own now for less money. You also see a lower tax rate on the house. Your grocery bill will be cheaper and gasoline won’t cost as much. There are the occasional tornado …

Plus: Curiosity about other things that should be cheaper but are more expensive.
It is getting harder and harder to save money grocery shopping. When I got to the big box stores that have food and grocery sections, I still often have to have a calculator to find out which product or which box is the best deal. But even when I’m trying to save money or find my favorite brands I get confused and ask questions, last week I even called those 800 numbers on the products to try and get some answers. Skippy is an example is how one store forced me to drive to a competitor. When Schnucks stopped carrying Skippy Peanut Butter, a national favorite I would drive to Dierbergs to buy my favorite peanut butter. Then Walmart opened food centers, I could get Skippy there at a cheaper price. Now Costco sells giant jars of Skippy …

Chesterfield store looking for peeps.
Need a job? How about a second job? Dierbergs groceries has its hiring sign out at the Chesterfield store in Market Place. That's located at Clarkson and Baxter roads. Sign up for a free Chesterfield Patch online newsletter. The store is open until 11 and midnight, so there may be hours available for second jobs. There are teens working evening shifts, and part-time. There seems to be turnover at the deli counter in employees. But you won't know for certain until you check it out and apply online. Click here.

Logo placement is not free and Honeycrisp apples aren’t cheap
Logos and Lights In 2011 MoDot announced it was cutting 1,200 jobs and closing 135 facilities, trying to adjust to the reduced funding brought on by the recession. However in 2009 when it was clear money was going to get tight, the MoDOT public relations people appeared to have no concept about saving money. From 2007 to January of 2012 I worked at a desk in the MoDOT Transportation Management Center at Hwy 141 and I-64 as an editor for a traffic reporting service. The main floor of the center looked like something you would see at the Johnson Space Center. Huge overhead monitors showing live traffic conditions, electronic maps with slowdowns and other very high tech cool looking stuff. Above this open two-story area was a glass …

It's the best way to rent DVDs.
Those who still rent DVDs in three-dimensions (the case and the disc you can hold) will recognize the Redbox kiosks in the foyer of Dierbergs (grocery) and in McDonald's (restaurant) and Schnuck's (on Olive) in Chesterfield. And there is a blue Blockbuster Express rental kiosk at the Mobil gas station on Clarkson Road near Baxter Road. Workers said the machine had been there about two years. See photos. With Redbox, you can find out the most popular movies in your zipcode. For example, here are the top 10 this week in ZIP 63017: Also, kiosk rentals are low-stress, organized as well as convenient, compared to say a Blockbuster store rental on Clarkson Road at Manchester (Kmart shopping center.) I'd forgotten a number of things about being …

The couple are recognized for starting grocery at Four Seasons.
Bob Dierberg and wife Sharon showed up to a Chesterfield City Council meeting Monday, when Mayor Bruce Geiger recognized them for their service to the city through their chain of Dierbergs grocery stores. Monday, Feb. 6 was proclaimed "Dierbergs Four Seasons Day" in Chesterfield. Dierberg started his first store 45 years ago on Olive Boulevard and Woods Mill Road at Four Seasons shopping center, after working for his uncle's grocery in Creve Coeur, and returning from college at University of Missouri at Columbia. That first Dierbergs store is still open, and typically busy. Current Store Manager Mike Haney accompanied the Dierberg couple to the council meeting. Bob and Sharon Dierberg said they met at the store during Bob's first year in …

A little odd but maybe funny to decorate this.
Toliet tattoos are the most recent find for holiday must-haves in the Chesterfield area. Dierbergs carries it, so it must be good, right? Dierbergs, yes Dierbergs, carries them in four designs and two sizes—one for that round seat cover and one for the oval lid. It's $5.99. The "tattoo" in this case, would also be known as a decal. So, no harm to the toliet seat cover with this decoration—slides on and comes off, according to the printed instructions. It's reusable. Three designs remain, as you can see in the acommpanying photos. (The penguin design may already be sold out.) This is a first for Dierbergs, in recent memory. If you haven't yet heard about the must-get holiday Dipstick for $6.97, click here. Lowes carries it.

Missouri is included in the 24 states and Washington, DC shipped peanut butter possibly containing Salmonella, FDA said.
Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Co. is voluntarily recalling 16-ounce jars of Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky, according to the Food and Drug Adminstration. The recall is to due to possible salmonella contamination. The peanut butter was distributed throughout 24 states and Washington, D.C., including Missouri—that's half the country. The jars in question would have been purchased between Nov. 8 and 17 and have a "best if used by" date of Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012. They also contain the production codes 1307004 and 1308004. In the St. Louis area, Dierbergs Spokesperson Todd Vasel tells Patch all of the Dierbergs were alerted to the recall and have checked for the recalled peanut butter. "We did not have any of the affected product in …

I live up in Northern Michigan where Charter has a cushy position of limited (true) competition and stone age customer service. I actually would like to be a customer, considering they are the only option, but after 3 years of asking for a line to be run to my home I have given up. Yes, I would have to pay for the line, but all I hear is silence from their "customer service". So, hearing the that…   more ›
