Accidents in both directions have resulted in lane closures around the area where I-64, I-270 and Route 141 converge.
Traffic is extremely slow or altogether at a stop on sections of Highway 40/Interstate 64 near Highway 141 and I-270 due to accidents in both directions that have several lanes closed. Emergency crews are currently working to clear two accidents, one in the eastbound lanes at Woodsmill Drive and one westbound at Maryville Center Drive, both of which have closed multiple lanes, said MoDOT Community Relations Coordinator Linda Wilson Horn. There is no clear time frame for when the lanes will be re-opened. Horn said traffic maps for the area around where I-64, I-270 and 141 converge are "almost all red and yellow," indicating that vehicles are moving very slowly. Police officials also said the interstate is experiencing significant issues…

Lanes close Monday night at 7 p.m. on I-270 as the expansion project begins between Manchester Road and Highway 44.
The Missouri Department of Transportation begins construction on the Interstate 270 Widening Project between Manchester Road (Route 100) and Interstate 44 Monday night. MoDOT will close various lanes on Interstate 270 in this section from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays through early May. Lane closures are necessary for crews to perform paving and restriping work to prepare for the widening work on the interstate. Because of the restrictions on the roadway and rock bluffs, MoDOT will permanently narrow all lanes on northbound and southbound I-270 to 11 feet (the same width as I-44 during the I-64 reconstruction in 2009 and 2010). Upon completion of the project, this section of roadway will still have full width shoulders in most locations. …

The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor, Krupp Construction will close two lanes of westbound Interstate 70 at the Interstate 270 interchange November 28-29, weather permitting. Crews will close two of the three lanes and the exit ramp from westbound I-70 to northbound and southbound I-270 Monday, November 28 and Tuesday, November 29 from 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Crews are installing a sign truss at the interchange. This work is part of a project to add a permanent lane on the westbound I-70 exit ramps to northbound and southbound I-270 as part of the year-long closure of the westbound I-70 Blanchette Bridge scheduled to begin in 2012.

The new speed limit is 60 mph in most areas.
Changes begin Friday that would make the variable speed limit signs on Interstate 270 advisory only. The signs were put in place three years ago, but their impact on traffic congestion was minimal, a study determined. The signs did cut down on accidents along the interstate though, making it the safest highway in the St. Louis metro area, as noted in a previous Patch article. The changes were announced in March. Advisory speed limits will not be enforced, but are instead meant for safety. They will display speeds from the 60-mph limit to 10 mph, depending on the amount of traffic. "The advisory speed limit is similar to having advisory speed limit signs posted on curves and ramps," said Tom Blair, Missouri Department of Transportation …

I know the weather was bad, true, but everybody here goes way over the speed limit and they tailgate all the time, it's no wonder the volume of accidents, they will just have to learn the hard way.   more ›
