Editor's Notebook

'Independence Day,' Sparklers and Basic Training

St. Louis "Patch" editors share their Fourth of July memories.

Here's a few of other St. Louis Patch editor's memories of Independence Day. Lights Over Water It must have been around 1968 when my parents bought their first boat, a little wood-hulled ski boat. Eckhard did not have any statistics on the number of tickets handed out for fireworks violations…

Sure, the Germans invented the frankfurter, but we put it on a bun with bright yellow mustard and created the traditional hot dog. These days, the lowbrow red hot is being lifted into the realm of culinary art, and nobody is doing more to offer a fascinating array of flavors and toppings—without being ridiculous—than Surf Dogs Grill and Key Lime Pie Company in Chesterfield. With a choice of 14 specialty dogs, it's difficult to make up your mind. Fortunately, Surf Dogs offers a sample platter with four minidogs called the Pup Sampler ($6.95), a great way to put the available styles to the taste test. Cook Bobby …
