Council Swearing-In or American Girl Store Party? Which Is the Bigger Deal?

Since few attend city meetings, let me walk you through a special one.

Chesterfield's City Council had its annual swearing-in ceremony last week, of four incumbents who won their seats back on the April 3 election. No new faces. Few people come to the regular meetings. But before the ceremony, there was the usual pre-meeting, meeting—called the Agenda Meeting in Chesterfield—a work session in other towns. The pre-meeting is open to the public and held in a small, awkward conference room. The table is too big for the room, and chairs face the wrong direction to view Powerpoint screenings. New Sales Taxes Overlap Existing Taxes—We're Charged Double

See what sales tax we pay here in Chesterfield and what it's supposed to be for.

A nearly secret amendment was added to a Missouri House bill for a sales tax in a southeast Missouri county, for library revenue. But the same measure also increases sales tax in the Great Rivers Greenway District for St. Louis, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. Choose Love Songs for West County Notables

Some tunes fit better than others, on this holiday.

Love For Sale: The Cole Porter classic is a perfect love song for St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley. In November Dooley threatened closing 20 parks and selling off the Elk and other wildlife at Lone Elk Park. I Can See Clearly Now…an excellent song for the folks at Smoke Free St. Louis, sung by Johnny Nash with Bob Marley's band backing him up. It is even a better song for the optometrists that keep campaign contributions flowing to members of the state legislature to ensure that a law stays on the books. And it's a law that is unique to Missouri and requires parents to obtain three eye exams for children between grades kindergarten and fifth grade. Checking Chesterfield’s current senator’s campaign finance records for November and…
