The Marquette High School robotics club took home a share of the trophy at this year's state championship.
One group of dedicated Marquette High School students will start next year with a simple goal: to take over the world. The world, in this case, being the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics World Championship, which has been held in St. Louis for the last several years. FIRST combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources and time limits, teams build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s become increasingly popular among students in the area, with Rockwood fielding a team at each of its high schools this year. The Marquette Team was split into two groups, the Gluons and the Baryons. The …

A first-time, unique partnership between two of Rockwood School District high schools leads to trip of a lifetime for orchestra students.
At the end of last week, 42 students from Eureka and Marquette high schools traveled to England to showcase their orchestra talents. Under the direction of James Nacy, of Marquette, and Patti Fleer, of Eureka, students will perform three concerts that feature a mixture of English and American music, ranging from Purcell to Lady Gaga. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Participating students paid their own expenses for the trip through combinations of personal financing and fundraising. Fleer said the students were excited about having this opportunity to travel and perform in England. “The prospect of sharing their talent and love of music with other people in another country will be the best part of all; I’m …

The postseason begins in one sport and is on the horizon for other sports as May arrives.
It seems like only yesterday that the high school spring sports season began. But the postseason has begun in one sport and is on the horizon for many other sports. Area golf teams teed it up last week for district tournaments, with the top two teams and top 15 individuals from players outside the top two teams advancing to sectional play. Parkway South High School won the Class 4 District 2 Tournament which was held at Persimmon Woods Golf Club in Weldon Spring. The Patriots won with a score of 214, which was six strokes better than CBC, which also qualified for sectionals as a team. Parkway South's Kyle Weldon was the individual medalist, shooting a two-over par 73. Parkway South's Jack Darland was tied for second with a 77. Wesley …

Parkway South is the conference team to watch. Wins in a pair of tight games over Lafayette kept the Patriots undefeated.
An unbeaten record at this point of the high school baseball season is indeed a rarity. But Parkway South won a pair of tight games over Lafayette last week and has yet to taste defeat in 2011. The Patriots were coming off of a sweep of Mehlville over the weekend. They scored 11 runs in the first inning in a 24-10 win on April 16. The Parkway South lead was actually cut to 11-9 after two innings, but then they scored six in both the fifth and sixth innings. Seven Parkway South players have multi-RBI games against Mehlville. Jake Brentz, John Calloway, James Calloway and Michael Patterson all drove in three. John Calloway scored five runs in the game. Things were a lot tighter in the sweep of Lafayette. John Calloway was 3-for-3 in an 8-6 …

by Carolina deLegarreta of Notre Dame High School In the midst of troubling times, it’s a wonderful reminder that people of any shape and size can shine. Marquette High School’s production of Hairspray highlighted this belief with golden voices that made the '60s feel very welcoming indeed. The beloved story of Hairspray debuted as a film in 1988, directed by John Waters. The film was received positively and later adapted as a Tony Award winning Broadway musical in 2002, with songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Perhaps the most well-known version is the 2007 film, with a star-studded cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Queen Latifah, and John Travolta. The plot follows Tracy Turnblad, a …

After weeks of preparing for the high energy musical, which is chock full of songs, the Marquette High School theater group is ready for its Friday premiere.
Audiences can expect a sweet slice of Broadway to grace a West County stage when Marquette High School starts its run of the musical Hairspray this weekend. Originally a 1988 John Waters film, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a character with a big build and bigger dreams. The 1960s Baltimore teenager aspires to be a dancer on the sock-hop style TV program “The Corny Collins Show.” The show is about more than dancing, though. It teaches acceptance. “When I saw it on Broadway, I fell in love with it,” said Judi Greene, the theater director at Marquette and the show's overall supervisor. She said the greatest appeal of "Hairspray" is no doubt its message. In fact, as part of the production, Greene and the cast discussed times …
