Mizzou-bound Ryan Rosburg blazes out with 15 points.
Columbia, MO—Even grown men are allowed to cry. Fourth annual Pun-Off cracks some smiles.
Marquette High School's wordplay competition Thursday proved to be an afternoon filled with clever jokes, innuendo and an engaged student body. Simply put, it was a whole lot of pun. Marquette High School's 4th Annual Pun-Off Winners: 1st Place —Ryan Blake, junior, Ballwin 2nd Place —Jeff Klein, junior, Chesterfield 3rd Place —Mary Baker, junior, Chesterfield 4th Place —Mitch Finnogan, senior, Chesterfield 5th Place —Chris Jablonski, junior, Chesterfield Pun Highlights Some of the highlights of the afternoon included puns based on…

By Brandon Simpson of Rockwood Summit High School "It's electrifyin!" What happens when summer love is confronted with popularity and teenage rebellion? Marquette High School answers this ever-lingering question with the popular musical, Grease. Grease opened on Broadway in 1972 and closed in 1980, running for over 3,300 performances. This high-energy show, at the time, was the longest running Broadway show. The well known story of the Thunderbirds and Pink Ladies has been incorporated into a famous feature film in 1978 that has become the cult classic that it is today. A story of a summer fling between the macho man, Danny, and the new girl, Sandy, is challenged when the new school year begins. Sandy (Gabby Mancuso) is portrayed as this …

Mustangs couldn't get the offense going in loss.
The Lafayette Lancers needed a big win on Friday night to clinch a berth in the MSHSAA Class 6 state football playoffs, and they got it, with a 41-7 win over the Marquette Mustangs at Marquette Stadium. The victory gave Lafayette its first Suburban West Conference championship since 2008, with an 8-0 record in league games this season. The Lancers jumped on Marquette quickly, scoring three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes to leave little doubt about what Friday’s outcome would be. Marquette finished the year with a 3-7 record. Unfortunately for Marquette, its offense was going south on Thursday, and couldn’t seem to put together enough good plays to sustain any of its early drives. In fact, Marquette quarterback Daniel Slattery, who …

Neil Shukla, 16, placed third in Mid-America Guitar competition and plays simply for the love of music.
When a letter to Santa didn’t produce a guitar for Christmas, 6-year-old Neil Shukla went over Santa’s head. He complained heartily to his parents, Harry and Connie Shukla. They soon realized Santa had made a huge mistake. The bearded-one promptly called with an apology and the promise of a guitar. Soon after, a guitar arrived. “Neil started playing and never looked back,” his mother said. Fast forward 10 years and Shukla’s passion for the guitar hasn't waned. The Marquette High School junior recently garnered third place in the Mid-America Guitar Competition. The event was held in New Haven, MO, and is part of an annual guitar camp drawing guitarists nationwide. “I wasn’t too nervous at the competition and it was a good experience,” …

Professional development is scheduled Friday in Parkway district. Monday is Labor Day holiday for both.
No classes are scheduled for Friday in Parkway School District, all grades. The district calendar described it as a "Professional Development" day. Neither are there classes Monday, Sept. 5. Rockwood district schools, including Marquette High School and a handful of elementary schools located in Chesterfield, will have classes Friday, Sept. 2. No classes on Labor Day, Sept. 5. Rockwood schools started a day later than Parkway, in August. Monday is Labor Day, a traditional holiday, and typically treated as the end of summer because in this area, aquatic centers and outdoor swimming pools close—despite 100-degree-plus temperatures—not to re-open until Memorial Day, in May. Students in both districts would be expected back to classes Tuesday …

The football mixer included teams from Marquette, Hazelwood West, University City and Howell Central.
Football jamborees always have been a way for coaches, players and fans to get a pre-season assessment on just how good—or not-so-good—our high school teams are this year. Marquette High School used the shotgun formation during play Friday, which gave their quarterbacks more time to find the big receivers downfield. It looks as though aerial play and gang-tackling will be central to University City's team, while the Hazelwood West squad has the speed to play on the outside and bring the ball up the field. The day wasn't without mishaps. There were dropped passes, fumbles and yellow flags. However, there also were some spectacular catches and outside runs that will have competitors searching for the right method to shut down talented …

Anna Ji's love of science is it nature or nurture? Likely both, because both her parents are research scientists.
Anna Ji is a star. The Marquette High School senior participated in the STARS program, a six-week internship for high school students interested in science. Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) was held in June at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Research opportunities were available at University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), Washington University, Saint Louis University and local corporations. "Students were placed in research labs in the area and mentored by scientists," Ji said. "I worked at Solae Company. My project was to tweak a basic nutritional supplement drink so it would meet the needs of people with swallowing difficulty." Ji's project, Development of a Soy Protein-blend Nutritional Beverage for Elderly …
