The president issued 23 executive actions and is urging Americans to pressure Congress to pass universal background checks on gun sales, ban military-style assault rifles and limit ammunition magazines. Share your thoughts here.
University City Mayor Shelley Welsch joined the ranks of several U.S. mayors Wednesday when she voiced support for President Barack Obama's gun control plan in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, CT. The president issued 23 executive actions and is urging Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass his proposed changes, including universal background checks on gun sales, a ban military-style assault rifles and limited ammunition magazines. Welsch, a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, issued a statement through the organization shortly after Obama spoke. "There are 33 Americans murdered with guns every day, and there's something we can do to stop the bloodshed. So why in the world would we …

Parkway School officials said they have already asked law enforcement to up their presence by having patrol officers check in at elementary schools.
Posting an armed officer in every Parkway and Rockwood school and in schools across the country is the goal of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the guns-rights lobby announced on Friday. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre, the organization's top lobbyist, at a Friday news conference, according to a Huffington Post report. The statement comes on the heels of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT, where 20 children and six adults were killed. NRA had remained silent until Wednesday, when it first announced its intention to offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." The Parkway School District already has armed school resource officers (…

The organization, which held its annual convention in St. Louis this year, plans a "major" news conference Friday in Washington, D.C.
The national conversation taking place in the wake of the Newtown, CT school shootings Friday has thus far not included the advocacy group for gun rights, the National Rifle Association. That changed Tuesday afternoon with a statement sent to reporters around the country: "The National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown. Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again…

The National Rifle Association is hosting a convention in St. Louis this weekend with speakers like Presidential candidate Mitt Romney, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt and Glenn Beck.
There will be a wide array of guns and knives for people to "ooh" and "ahh" about as the National Rifle Association (NRA) brings its annual meeting and exhibits to town Friday and through the weekend at America's Center. St. Louis is hosting the NRA convention for the second time in five years. In 2007, the city was the beneficiary of an NRA decision to abandon its original host city of Columbus, OH, a retaliation that followed the Columbus City Council's passage of a law banning assault-type weapons. The NRA moved its big confab to St. Louis and liked it so much it came back this year. So, what restrictions on firearms are acceptable? By its actions, the NRA obviously doesn't like bans on assault weapons, but are there any restrictions …

Marco Polo Outfitters relishes the chance to get in front of customers.
Anyone walking through the annual convention at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in St. Louis will be witness to seven acres of what many here have called "Nirvana" for gun enthusiasts. For Chesterfield's Marco Polo Outfitters, a dealer of high-end guns, participating as an exhibitor at the event is a rare opportunity for the by-appointment company to get much-needed facetime with thousands of people from around the country. Just as important, a company official said, is the opportunity to meet customers from right here in St. Louis. "St. Louis doesn’t know we’re here yet, and this is a lot of help,” Jeff Nichols, a sales executive told Patch on the exhibit floor at America's Center. The firm outgrew its former home and …
